What should be the characteristics of a (cheap) humidor?

A cheap humidor must meet basic requirements. If these requirements are met, the cheap humidor you buy will last you for decades. A good humidor is an integral part of the cigar smoking culture. The anticipation every cigar aficionado feels when he picks up a cigar in perfect condition from a well-made, reliable humidor with a lid that closes with a distinctive "whistle" makes his heart beat a little faster. Because of the price of cigars and the possible consequences of improper storage, the extra cost of a good humidor pays for itself in a very short time. Cheap humidors that meet all of the requirements are already available at very reasonable prices and there is no longer a need to spend a fortune to buy them.

  • The lid has to close relatively tightly so the humidor does not lose moisture.
  • The humidor body has to have a good insulation properties that effectively prevents moisture leakage. Usually a one-piece board offers the best insulation.
  • The inner lining of the humidor should be Spanish cedar. The thickness of the cedar lining should be at least 1.5 mm. This is difficult to check at the time of purchase. Often the buyer has access only to the information about the material and thickness of the inner lining provided by the manufacturer. Unfortunately not all manufacturers provide this information. When you buy a humidor from a top manufacturer who has been on the market for decades, you can be sure that both of these requirements are met.
  • There must be air circulation throughout the humidor. The shelves or trays must have enough openings to allow air to circulate. If the humidor is equipped with drawers or shelves, proper ventilation holes must be provided in the design and construction.
  • The humidification system should use an acrylic polymer based sponge and it should be adapted to the size and capacity of the humidor. Cheap humidors usually use synthetic sponges. Such humidification systems should be replaced.
  • The hinges should be reliable. Hinges with a strut, which can be built into the humidor frame, have a much longer life than standard piano hinges that are screwed into the back of the humidor. Spacer hinges are rarely used in cheap humidors, simply because the walls are not thick enough to withstand them.
  • To measure humidity you must have a humidor with a hygrometer. The most accurate hygrometers are analog hair hygrometers or digital hygrometers with high-quality humidity sensors. Conventional hygrometers, which use metal springs and which almost all humidors in the lower price range have, tend to be inaccurate; even after a short time of calibration there can be deviations of 5% or more.
